A simple card and a simple post.
I was reminded yesterday why I make cards.
It was a crazy weekend. My mom's best friend's husband was killed by a drunk driver Sunday morning. (Read the comments in this article to see a glimpse in the incredible life that he lived.) My mom quickly left to be with her friends in Dallas. I knew I needed to get a card in the mail Monday...."I'll just pick one up at the store. It will be quick and I have a {crazy} day tomorrow anyway."
As I drove the 2 hour drive home from my parents house on Sunday night, I knew that I needed to take the time to make a card. As I sat and got out all of my supplies, my thoughts were with our friends with every cut that I made and every bow that I tied. It was therapeutic. Thinking of my blessings...and making sure that I tell everyone how much I love them.
My boys drew a picture for Gary's only grandson....we stuffed our envelopes and put it in the mailbox.
At a time when you feel like there is nothing to do but pray for comfort for loved ones, I was reminded why love this hobby so much. Making something with your hands...putting {time} and {love} into every little detail. It is {something} to show love.
Oh I had shivers as I read your post today, my prayers are with your mom and your family. I was hit by a drunk driver, but I am alive (retired on disability) but still here. I agree with you that making cards and scrappin is a good way to get through times of grief as well as times of joy.

ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful card. My husband worked with him at Parkland and admired this hard working physician. Very sad.
ReplyDeleteWow, Erin what a small world! His wife Laurel had been in Utah visiting our family last week. She got home Thur pm and the accident was Sunday. My dad worked at Parkland as head of dermatology for 25 years and is now at the Univ. of Utah hospital. We miss Dallas! I was born at Parkland :)

So True! People realize that you didn't just go in a store and buy one and that you put your whole heart and soul into making the card! It is so sad to lose a loved one by a DRUNK DRIVER!

This is such a great reminder of why we do what we do. I craft and sew to spread my love, but sometimes forget that's why I do it.
ReplyDeleteI made some pajama pants actually on Saturday for my cousin and aunt. My cousin is battling a brain tumor, now given only 6 months to live. Making something was the only way I really knew how to cope. But now they have a piece of me when I can't be there.

My family's prayers are with them at this hard time, I read the article about him and what a fantastic person. What a senseless loss when are they going to treat these drunk drivers that end up taking a life with a murder charge not manslaughter. My nephew 29 yrs old was murdered in March by a drunk with a gun, small arguement and he shot him in the head. My prayers are with your family and the Dr's family.

ReplyDeleteMy heart aches for your mom's BFF. I lost my bestest friend in a car accident 5 years ago. It was the hardest thing I've ever dealt with.
